What is the Pick Up The Pace Movement??? In order to accurately answer that question I have to start from the very beginning….
In my younger years I was part of a group called Natural Forces and my emcee name was RENaissance. We were doing quite well and started drawing attention from some independent labels. Well right around that time (2002) my partner was in a horrible car accident that left him paralyzed and then the following year (2003) my daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.
Well after trying to cope with my “brother’s” situation and my daughter’s condition I was pretty stagnant for quite some time. Right around 2007 when I was finishing my masters degree my partner and I reconnected and discussed finishing the album. PUTP was originally one of my solo songs for our album. It was from that album that Pick Up The Pace was born.
The track was a traditional golden era hip hop motivational song that was meant to inspire and to remind people not to let setbacks or trials defeat you. It was my way of expressing how I sat unmotivated feeling sorry for my friend and myself and it was time to get up and get moving. Because I started working as a Guidance Counselor and with the birth of my 2nd daughter going back and forth to Boston seemed more and more far fetched but the message carried on.
When I started my job in the school system I would tell my students, “I’m a counselor by day but emcee by trade, so either way what I say tends to get around my way!” and they started tuning into this Guidance Couselor/Emcee. I formed a brotherhood with my students in which I emphasized making good choices and surrounding themselves with like minded people. I’m not that far removed that I forgot the rules or what it meant to be loyal to your block, hood, neighborhood or whatever. The truth is, that mentality can lead to negative outcomes, bad decisions and quite honestly a halt in progression. Not everyone that came with you can go where you are going, PERIOD!
“Pick up the pace or get left” became a slogan and motto that my kids and students live by now. We all know a person famous or otherwise that couldn’t walk away from an old lifestyle or associations and the results were disastrous. The premise behind the movement is about motivation and progression and anything or anyone that doesn’t help you reach your goal is dead weight and thus should be left behind. It’s not a diss! It’s a fact of life! In sports no athletes slows down for a defensive player to catch up! In music the one working the hardest gets to shine! In business the go getter benefits from the grind! In school the one who studies the hardest will without a doubt put themselves in a better position to being successful. Those that don’t put in the work get left! Simple as that!
This movement has evolved from a song to a way of life! It’s the voice in all of us that lets us know that it’s time to move forward one way or the other. After that there is only one real question to answer…Do you have the courage to make that decision? The choice is yours!
Don’t get left…
